Welcome to Wind River Country Wyoming

There is a place where ancient geology meets today’s glorious sunrise, where an adventurous day of moving cattle from horseback, can be followed by an evening of fine dining and fine art. In this place, people are friendly and are as likely to invite a stranger home for supper as to stop and fix a flat tire or lend directions to the traveler. Wide expanses of country enrich the senses, from sage on the morning air, or the cry of an eagle, to the sight of majestic snow-covered mountain peaks. Welcome to Wind River Country! The landscape here defines our everyday activities, with vivid displays of color, sound, and sights of breathtaking wonder. It may be the Red Desert, which can leave a visitor speechless with glowing colors and rugged terrain, or the alpine wonder of the Wind River Range. The traveler may find a highway briefly blocked with an old-fashioned cattle drive, right through town. From the highest peak in the state (Gannett Peak, at 13,785 feet), down through a valley laced with the Oregon, Mormon, and California wagon train routes, still showing signs of deeply rutted wagon tracks, and on across the authentic cultural sites of the sparsely beautiful Wind River Reservation, there is never a shortage of magnificent views and adventures to match in this country. We also have two state parks and two national forests here, for even more recreational opportunities! When you experience firsthand the vast array of terrain and geological wonders, it’ll become clear why so many activities here center around our great outdoors. We have a couple thousand miles of great fishing streams, plenty of trails for riding or hiking, and vacation highlights that range from rodeos and Powwows to sled dog races, jazz festivals, a mountain man rendezvous and hot air balloon rally! And with antelope numbering nearly as high as the human population, you’ll find there’s plenty of elbow room, any season, to enjoy your vacation. The only thing Wind River Country doesn’t have is crowds! If you’re visiting here, the time will come when you have to leave Wind River Country. But the scent of sage will linger in your memory. Powwow drums may echo in your dreams. And you may find it impossible to get this place out of your heart. When visitors fall in love with big, wide, Wyoming around here, it’s soul deep, and forever. Then we invite you to come back soon. Come back and stay. And make Wind River Country your own splendid secret.
